Eight students from GESU Elementary School in Detroit visited Freudenberg Sealing Technologies (FST) in Plymouth as part of the company’s e² initiative, which connects education and environmental awareness through hands-on learning experiences.
The students, all members of GESU’s Science Club, presented a data-driven project focused on offsetting carbon dioxide emissions. Each of the students spoke during the presentation, sharing how they calculated the total daily commute distance for GESU’s staff and students, the types of vehicles used and the resulting carbon output. Their research showed that over 2,666 miles are driven daily, producing approximately 2,232 kilograms of CO₂. The students also outlined strategies to reduce emissions, including reforestation, energy efficiency, and the adoption of electric vehicles.
Following the presentation, the students toured the FNST labs, concluding their visit with an art project led by Stephanie DeRussel, Branding Manager for the Freudenberg Group. Using materials from the many Freudenberg business groups, the students created Assemblage-style artworks, a form of visual art that incorporates three-dimensional elements. DeRussel will curate the final pieces for display at FNACC and FNST’s North American headquarters.
“This visit was a great example of how industry and education can work hand in hand to inspire young learners,” said Amanda Lobley, who championed the GESU e² partnership. “The students were engaged, enthusiastic, and clearly having fun—from presenting their research to exploring our labs and creating art. Their energy reminded us why these connections matter.”
GESU Catholic School serves students from preschool through eighth grade, emphasizing academic excellence and community engagement. The collaboration with FST reflects a shared commitment to sustainability and youth development—values at the heart of the e² initiative, which bridges education and environmental awareness through immersive, hands-on experiences that empower students to think critically and act responsibly.
