{"id":24110,"date":"2026-01-29T12:11:51","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T11:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sw.fst.com\/magazine\/?p=24110"},"modified":"2026-01-29T12:12:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T11:12:27","slug":"no-manual-no-problem-repairing-plow-cylinders-from-another-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sw.fst.com\/magazine\/en\/2026\/01\/no-manual-no-problem-repairing-plow-cylinders-from-another-era\/","title":{"rendered":"No Manual, No Problem: Repairing Plow Cylinders from Another Era"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-cnvs-paragraph-callout wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>At Freudenberg Sealing Technologies\u2019 Lead Center for Accumulators in Remagen, Germany, a very particular kind of service is still alive: the repair of hydraulic plow turning cylinders -components that have largely disappeared from modern agriculture.<\/strong><\/strong> Despite decades of technological progress, these cylinders are still serviced and repaired upon request from farmers and workshops. The work is carefully integrated into ongoing operations so that it does not disrupt day-to-day business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A plow is an agricultural implement used to loosen and turn soil. Hydraulic plow turning cylinders are used to rotate a tractor-mounted plow into the desired position and lock it in place. In the past, these cylinders were manufactured by what is now the Lead Center Accumulators division of Freudenberg Sealing Technologies (FST) in Remagen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"720\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1280 \/ 720;\" width=\"1280\" controls src=\"https:\/\/sw.fst.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Wendezylinder-Betrieb.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, that technology has largely become obsolete. Single-acting plow turning cylinders of the classic design are more likely to be found in technical museums than out in the field. Still, a few remain in use. Some time ago, a farmer contacted the FST site in Remagen with a request to repair a cylinder that was more than 40 years old. Thanks largely to the expertise of long-time process engineer Erich K\u00f6rbel, the repair was successful. <em>Sealing World<\/em> reported on the case at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Word of that expertise spread quickly. Since then, farmers and workshops have repeatedly turned to FST for help. \u201cWe\u2019re happy to do it,\u201d says Marcus Darms, Head of Global Operations at the Lead Center Accumulators. \u201cThe only condition is that it may take some time. In addition, the site\u2019s maintenance department is normally responsible only for the company\u2019s own machinery and equipment, not for products that were manufactured there decades ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNevertheless, we offer this service because it increases our visibility in the industry,\u201d Darms says. \u201cEspecially the contact with workshops opens the door to additional business. Many people associate Freudenberg Sealing Technologies exclusively with seals. They don\u2019t even realize that we manufacture pressure accumulators here in Remagen, or hydraulic components such as belt tensioning cylinders for the suspension systems of agricultural vehicles. That\u2019s something we\u2019d like to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erich K\u00f6rbel has since retired, but he remains closely involved in the refurbishment of these \u201cretro cylinders\u201d &#8211; now working from his own home workshop. He cleans the components, replaces the seals with new FST products, and reassembles the cylinders with professional care. Initial disassembly and final functional testing on a test bench are carried out at the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, this is not a case of \u201cinnovating together,\u201d but rather of \u201cmaintaining and repairing together\u201d &#8211; all in the service of customer satisfaction and a strong reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image
