“The earth is starting to sweat.” That’s how the headline of this edition’s cover story puts it. Some say climate change has always been with us, complete with major transitions between the ages of heat and ice. That’s true, but others say the shift has never been as rapid and dramatic as it is now.
The fact is the combustion of coal, natural gas, and oil increased sharply with the onset of industrialization in the 19th century. The result has been the growing accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Since 2010, the planet has experienced its five hottest years since industrialization began.
At Freudenberg Sealing Technologies (FST), we are already doing a great deal to become more sustainable ourselves while putting our customers on a path to a more sustainable future. In this issue, for example, we describe how FST uses waste heat from manufacturing operations to heat buildings and production processes.
Let us take you to Australia: There, Fortescue Future Industries is tackling the challenges of green hydrogen and renewable energy across a broad spectrum of applications – and FST has the ability to contribute its expertise to the effort.
We can all do something for the environment and the climate in our personal lives as well. What are you doing at home? Do you have a photovoltaic system on your roof? Do you buy fruit and vegetables locally? Are you more likely to take short trips by bicycle? How are you heating your homes? Feel free to send us an email at SealingWorld@fst.com and let us know.
The SEALING WORLD editorial team hopes 2023 comes to a positive end for you and your loved ones despite the world’s climate disasters and armed conflicts. We also hope you can enjoy the year-end break in good health and with a sense of satisfaction.
